School 21

admin platform 2.0

about

School 21 administrators do a lot of work: they manage educational programs, help students with organizational issues, fine and reward students, organize and conduct events.

Product Designer (2021—2023)

I designed new and improve existing functionality, conducted research, made layouts and controled implementation.

my role

To perform all these tasks, the administrator needs a user-friendly interface with clear navigation between sections.

Goals

1

The platform was not created from scratch, our task was to redesign the first version, in which many points were not taken into account or did not exist due to technical limitations from the backend.

2

Based on research, found out what administrators lack to fulfill their duties, as well as figure out how to improve existing functionality.

Redesign principles

Design system

Version 1.0 was built on an outdated design system that we were moving away from.

scalability

In version 1.0, a scalability problem regularly appeared: new features were required and sections that had nowhere to put. Because of this, the interface seemed bloated and overloaded.

While working on the new version, we took into account all the problems of version 1.0: an outdated design system, technical limitations, problems with scalability and interface congestion. From these problems were born the principles on which we relied.

Version 2.0 was created on a design system developed for the student interface (with modifications). This significantly accelerated the processes: it was convenient for the whole team to work with an already familiar design system.

In version 2.0, from the very beginning of development, we organized clear navigation, and also thought over the principle of building pages, in which the addition of new functions would not cause a clutter of buttons on the page.

Navigation

Version 1.0

A new section was added to the general list, without any organized hierarchy. The menu has become overloaded:

Version 2.0

For each administrator role, a menu was thought out with a set of options necessary only for this role. Then we sorted all the options according to the general areas of the administrator's work, which led to the appearance of an intuitive nesting:

Interview

During the work on the project, research was the most important stage. We asked for and received feedback from users on everything from measuring the usability of existing features to missing features.

usability-testing

Under our supervision, administrators went through certain scenarios in the new interface, for example, they gave out an achievement to a student. Based on the observations and subsequent discussion, we drew conclusions and made the necessary adjustments to the functionality.

Designed functionality

events

Administrators were responsible for creating and running events. They needed functionality for convenient monitoring and filtering of events - upcoming, current and completed.

Clusters

An interactive map where the administrator could see who was sitting at which workplace. For example, to understand who to issue a fine for loud conversations.

Logging reviews

From time to time, students came to the administrators and asked how this or that assessment was calculated for the project. To help answer this question, we came up with the functionality of logging all checks. The page contained all the logs by which it was possible to understand how the overall result of the project was formed.

calendar

In version 1.0, the calendar only allowed signing up for project reviews. In the new version, we have significantly expanded the functionality - we have added the ability to create events, slots for working off penalties, add exams to the schedule.

Video library

"School 21" has a huge number of videos that affect almost every aspect of a student's life. Administrators could create collections, as well as assign a video to a specific student.
